In Ronald King and Paul Sum (eds.), Romania under Băsescu: Aspirations, Achievements, and Frustrations during his First Presidential Term. Lanham, MD: Lexington Books, 2011,pp. 239-255

This chapter focuses on Romanian youth during Traian Basescu’s first term as the President of Romania, exploring how the social values and political behavior of high school students changed over a four-year span. The data come from a national panel study in which the same representative sample of high school students was interviewed in 2005 and in 2009. The political situation in Romania changed over this period, as did parts of educational policy. We speculate that these system-level changes help explain some of the results presented in this analysis. Our main objective is to understand the views of students as a critical component of Romanian society and to contribute to the ongoing effort to reform the Romanian educational system to help it better promote the development of a globalized and democratic citizenry.
